Bright Shadow -- Avi

I'm a little disappointed in Avi. He's written better.

The story itself has some merit: a young, unsuspecting girl is given the power of the last five wishes in the world, but using each wish brings her closer to death. It's an intriguing idea. However . . .  His prose is childish, his characters are unlikable, and the story completely lacks suspense. With an average of eight pages per chapter and with an added section break on every other page, the pacing is choppy and hard to follow.

Parents may rest assured that this book won't hold any nasty surprises for their children, but it won't teach them much either.
